When considering domains and domain names one can very easily see a pattern that is being followed by website owners.
It is a common practice among website owners to book their domain names for one year initially and renew it every year. There are very good reasons for us to believe that Google trusts websites that have both been online for a long time and have a long history. This is just like the case where people prefer to get their favorite products from a well established local store rather than walking in to a new store.
Applying the same comcept to your websites Google prefers to trust websites that have been online for a long time . However, the question here is whether indications that a website will have a lengthy future presence will affect Google’s treatment of that website.
SEO experts and search engine marketing experts believe that Google gives credit to websites that are registered for a longer duration than just one year, rather than those which are registered only for twelve months and renewed successively each year. Experts believe that the domain name period is one of the 200 ranking factors used by Google. This therefore makes it a very important point to consider and keep in mind.
One of the most important factors is that if you have a premium domain name it is best to have it registered for a longer period to minimize the risk of losing it. This way you will not have to worry about losing your domain name to someone else if you somehow come in a situation wherein you get late to renew the domain.
A lengthy domain name period is also points to the fact that a website owner is serious about his or her business, and that the website under question is just not another spam site being used for promoting the ranking of another website. For blogs, it is necessary that they be updated for several years before becoming regarded as a reliable source of information for the internet users.
History shows that many illegitimate domain names are registered just for one year and if you do the same there is a danger that your website will also be associated with these types of websites.
These few logical points above are also supported by patent awarded by Google few years back.
“Certain signals may be used to distinguish between illegitimate and legitimate domains.
For example, domains can be renewed up to a period of 10 years. Valuable (legitimate) domains are often paid for several years in advance, while doorway (illegitimate) domains rarely are used for more than a year.
Therefore, the date when a domain expires in the future can be used as a factor in predicting the legitimacy of a domain and thus, the documents associated therewith. “
This is a clear indication that domains that are registered for a longer time period are considered more legitimate. This is one of the easiest ways of telling Google and other top search engines that you mean business and you are not an illegitimate website or business on the internet. Although single year booking of domain names will not automatically make you an illegitimate website, it is best to be on the safer side of the fence.
We have to understand that Google does not boost the rankings of domains that are registered for a longer period but it certainly helps to give the appearance that you are serious about your website.
There are no hard and fast rules that will tell you the number of years you should book your domain name for. The best way to make a determination is by observing your competitors. You need to be one step ahead of your competitor. If they have registered their domain name for two years, then go for three to four years at minimum.
